Cellular Sales Partners to Help Kansas City Children this Holiday

Kansas City, Kan. (PRWEB) December 01, 2011

Cellular Sales, the nation?s largest Verizon premium wireless retailer, recently announced a partnership with Kansas City-area law enforcement working to give children and families in need a holiday experience they will not soon forget.

?Cellular Sales is thrilled to join the efforts of the Platte City Police Department in the Shop with a Cop program,? said Beau Hammon, regional director of Cellular Sales. ?We have donated an iPad that will be included in a silent auction to help fund this project.?

The Shop with a Cop program provides funds which allow area children in need to go shopping for Christmas gifts - both for themselves and for their family members. Law enforcement officers from the Platte City Police Department accompany the children on their shopping trips, help wrap the gifts and treat the children to lunch afterward.

Cellular Sales was founded in Knoxville, Tenn. 18 years ago and has, for the past four years, been named by Inc. Magazine one of the nation?s fasted growing privately-owned retailers. In 2011, Cellular Sales ranked among the nation?s 75 fastest growing retailers in the Inc. 5000. The company currently operates nearly 500 stores across the U.S.

According to Lieutenant Al DeValkenaere of the Platte City Police, the wireless retailer?s participation will help the organization meet its projected goal of serving 30 children, an increase over last year?s total. At-risk children are identified for inclusion in the program by employees of the Platte County school district as well as social service professionals, and each child is provided $ 200 with which to shop.

?The program makes Christmas possible for these kids,? he said. ?It?s a tough thing for a parent to be unable to provide Christmas for his or her family, but in today?s economy, more people are finding themselves in that exact situation. Fortunately, our Shop with a Cop program will give local children and families a holiday to remember and this wouldn?t be possible without the support of local businesses like Cellular Sales.?

DR. PHIL to Air Episode Addressing the Effects of Domestic Violence on Children

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 14, 2012

Makers of Memories featured in a segment that will focus on what UNICEF calls ?one of the most damaging, unaddressed human rights violations in the world today.?

An episode of DR.PHIL will air Monday, January 16th [check local listings], focusing on the impact of childhood exposure to domestic violence. This episode will mark one of the first times that a significant portion of a national television program has dedicated itself to what UNICEF calls ?one of the most damaging, unaddressed human rights violations in the world today.?

This is a noteworthy development because there are five million children in the U.S. who were exposed to domestic violence in 2011. Nearly two out of three of those children will go on to repeat the cycle of violence as adults. There are also 40 million Americans who have been exposed to domestic violence in their lives and are still living with the effects. Addressing the children who are exposed to domestic violence and the adults who used to be those children is critical to ending the cycle of violence, according to the Makers of Memories Foundation.

?I commend Dr. Phil for having devoted a show to the impact of childhood exposure to domestic violence. If we are to ever address the continuing cycle of violence in this country and around the world, helping these children and adults who were these children is critical,? said Brian F. Martin, Founder of the Makers of Memories Foundation who is prominently featured in the segment. ?One of the greatest obstacles in the fight against domestic violence is a lack of public awareness about the impact it has on children. This segment is an opportunity to shed light on a silent epidemic that affects hundreds of millions of children across the globe.?

DR. PHIL will debut an audio clip of a 911 call from a six year old girl in a home where domestic violence is occurring. The show will open with the clip which dramatizes the trauma that children experience. The clip will also be featured in a soon to be released documentary on childhood exposure to domestic violence being produced by Makers of Memories.

In addition, the Makers of Memories Foundation has worked with the nation?s foremost experts and clinicians on domestic violence to develop a pioneering program to help those children who are affected. The accumulated knowledge and research on how to help reduce the cycle of violence has been available for years, but Makers of Memories has led the effort to turn this knowledge into the first ever scalable program which will be rolled out later this spring.

It is important to note that children exposed to domestic violence are six times more likely to commit suicide and 50 times more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol. The impact can be so severe that their symptoms often meet the clinical criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the Makers of Memories Foundation.
